Wild Rice Cooking Instructions

Basic Preparation

Wash Wild Rice thoroughly. Add 1 cup KC's Best Wild Rice. Reduce heat. Cover and simmer for approximately 45 minutes or until texture is obtained. Drain excess liquid. Season to taste. Try adding butter, sauteed onions, green peppers, bacon or mushrooms for a gourmet treat!

Makes about 3-4 cups cooked wild rice

This preparation applies to the following Wild Rice varieties:

Canadian Lake Machine Harvested Wild Rice
Canadian Lake Wild Rice
Extra Fancy Wild Rice, Minesota Cultivated
Extra Fancy Long Grain Wild Rice
Soup Grade Wild Rice, Minnesota Cultivated
Minnesota Cultivated Soup Grade Wild Rice



Hand Harvested Wild Rice Preparation

Lake rice cooks a bit faster than other types.


1 cup hand harvested wild rice
6 cups water

Rinse wild rice thoroughly. Add 1 cup KC's BEST Wild Rice to 6 cups boiling water. Reduce heat. Cover and simmer for approximately 30 minutes or until desired texture is obtained. Drain excess liquid. Season to taste. Try adding butter sautéed onions, green peppers, bacon or mushrooms for a gourmet treat. Makes approximately 3 cups cooked wild rice.

This preparation applies to the following Wild Rice variety:

Hand Harvested Wild Rice, Leech Lake band of Ojibwe
100% Hand Harvested Wild Rice


KC's Best Instant Wild Rice Preparation

Stove Top

 

  1. In medium saucepan, bring 1 1/3 cups water, 2 tsp. butter and 1/4tsp salt (optional) to a boil
  2. Stir in 2.75 oz package of KC's Best Instant Wild Rice, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 5 minutes
  3. Remove from heat, drain excess liquid. Fluff with fork and serve

 

Makes about 3 servings

Microwave

 

  1. In microwave safe bowl, add 1 1/3 cups water, 2 tsp butter and 1/4 tsp salt (optional) to a 2.75 oz package of KC's Best Instant Wild Rice. Lightly cover.
  2. Heat on high for 5 minutes while stirring occasionally
  3. Remove from microwave, drain excess liquid. Fluff with fork and serve

 

Makes about 3 servings




Gourmet Tips

 

  • For firmer, nutty texture, decrease cooking time
  • For softer, more tender wild rice, increase cooking time
  • Try substituting above liquid mixture with chicken or beef broth
  • For extra flavor, add sauteed mushrooms, onions, green pepper or pieces of bacon
